I’ve never been very skillful with a pencil or brush, so collage seemed a good way to go, and the thought-processes involved are very similar to when I overdub sounds in the recording studio. During my rock’n’roll tours in the 70’s I made frequent visits to thrift shops in the USA and Europe, and built up quite a collection of kitsch 50’s/60’s magazines and pulp fiction. When I set up Pipe Studios in 1978 I decided to take them off the shelf and get the scissors to them. These collages finally evolved into covers for some of the albums I made at that time, as well as a series of postcards called "Cards To Keep", which were sold at London’s Institute of Contemporary Art shop and elsewhere. Although these images are over twenty years old and use completely different materials, I see a direct connection with the images I am making now.
